Palm Kernel Crushing Process

2026-10-28 HUATAI

Distinguish between two easily confused processes

① Nut cracking: Breaking the hard shell to extract the palm kernel.

② Palm kernel crushing: Crushing the palm kernels themselves—after they have been cleanly separated from the shells—as a pretreatment step for extracting palm kernel oil. The following section focuses on this step.

Purpose

Palm kernels are dense and hard, with an oil content of 48%–52%. Pressing whole, intact kernels results in a very low oil yield. Crushing: Breaking the kernels and rupturing the oil-bearing cells to increase the surface area exposed to heat and pressure. This facilitates subsequent conditioning (steaming/roasting) and oil extraction (via pressing or solvent extraction), ultimately improving oil yield.

Process Control Points (Key)

1. Feed Moisture Content: 6%–8%

If moisture is too high, the material becomes soft, causing it to stick to the rollers or clog the machinery. If it is too dry, it shatters into excessive fine powder (which leads to solids in the oil, cloudy crude oil, and clogging of the press cage, all of which reduce oil yield).

2. Target Particle Size: 4–8 fragments per kernel. Strictly limit the production of fine powder; avoid pulverizing the kernels.

3. Process Sequence: Cleaning/Impurity Removal → Toothed-Roller Crushing → Conditioning (Steaming/Roasting) → Screw Pressing.

Unlike soybeans or rapeseed, palm kernels are generally not processed into flakes; instead, they are typically crushed, conditioned (steamed/roasted), and then pressed.

Equipment Selection Comparison

Preferred: Toothed-roller crusher (double-roll). Utilizes both compression and shearing; produces minimal fine powder. This is the industry standard.

Not Recommended (as primary equipment): Hammer mill. Tends to pulverize the material too finely, resulting in excessive dust and fine solids. Used only in specific, specialized process configurations.

Comparison: Palm Nut Shelling vs. Palm Kernel Crushing

Palm Nut Shelling | Palm Kernel Crushing

Raw Material: Palm nuts (with hard shells) | Palm kernels (already de-shelled and cleaned)

Objective: Crack the shell while keeping the kernel as intact as possible | Intentionally break the kernel particles to rupture the oil-bearing cells

Equipment: Centrifugal sheller or shelling rollers | Toothed-roller crusher

Downstream Process: Air classification | Hydrocyclone (for shell-kernel separation) → Conditioning (steaming/roasting) → Oil press

Common Issues

1. Excessive fine powder: Roll gap is too small, or raw material is too dry. Solution: Increase the roll gap; adjust moisture content.

2. Material sticking to rollers/clumping: Raw material moisture content exceeds the limit.

3. Low oil yield: Particles are too large; insufficient crushing, meaning oil-bearing cells have not been adequately ruptured.
