Palm Kernel Separation Process

2026-10-14 HUATAI

Palm Kernel Separation

① Stage 1: After pressing the palm fruit, palm nuts (hard shells containing the kernel) are separated from the fibrous residue.

② Stage 2 (Commonly referred to as kernel-shell separation): The palm nuts are cracked to separate the inner kernels (palm kernels) from the shell fragments; the kernels are sent for palm kernel oil extraction, while the shells serve as a boiler fuel by-product.

Complete Process (Standard workflow for large-scale palm oil mills)

1. Depericarping

Residue after pressing: a mixture of fiber and palm nuts. Gravity and air separation are used: lighter fibers are blown away, while heavier, intact palm nuts are collected.

Fibers are typically used as boiler fuel.

2. Palm Nut Drying

Reduces moisture content; excessive moisture causes kernels to crush easily during cracking. Moisture is controlled to approximately 8%.

3. Grading/Screening

Nuts are graded by size. Cracking mixed sizes leads to high breakage rates and poor separation efficiency; this is a critical preparatory step.

4. Cracking (Ripple Mill / Centrifugal Cracker)

Impact and compression are used to crack the hard shells. Goal: shatter the shell while keeping the internal kernel as intact as possible.

Challenges: If the gap is too narrow, kernels get crushed; if too wide, cracking is incomplete.

5. Kernel-Shell Separation (Core Stage)

Two mainstream methods:

Air separation (Gravity/pneumatic separation; most common): Shell fragments are lighter and removed by airflow; kernels are heavier and sink for collection. Low cost, suitable for continuous production.

Hydrocyclone / Clay bath separation (Wet method; common in older African plants): Utilizes density differences—shells float while kernels sink. Offers higher separation purity but consumes water and requires wastewater treatment facilities. 6. Secondary Screening + Re-drying

A small amount of uncracked kernels is recirculated to the cracker; separated palm kernels are dried to a moisture content of 7% before storage and subsequent processing (pressing/solvent extraction) to produce palm kernel oil (PKO); palm shells are collected and sold as fuel.

Equipment List

Grading screen → Corrugated cracker → Gravity air separation column (cyclone collector) → Drying system

Key Process Indicators

• Cracking rate: ≥95%

• Kernel breakage rate: Lower is better; ideally <3% (broken kernels reduce oil yield)

• Separation purity: Shell content in kernels ≤1%; minimal whole kernels in shell fraction (to reduce raw material loss)

Project Challenges (Overseas plants in Africa/Southeast Asia)

1. Fluctuating palm kernel moisture content: Raw materials are damp and clump together during the rainy season, significantly impairing grading and air separation efficiency while overloading the drying section.

2. Difficulty in adjusting cracker clearances: Requires skilled operators; local worker training takes a long time.

3. High water consumption in wet separation: Dry air separation is preferred in water-scarce regions (e.g., parts of Africa).

4. High palm shell hardness: Rapid wear on cracker hammers and corrugated liners leads to high spare part consumption; adequate spare part inventory is essential for overseas projects.

Product Value

• Palm kernels: Raw material for producing palm kernel oil (PKO)—a high-saturated-fat oil used in food and cosmetics.

• Palm shells: Solid fuel; can be burned directly in plant boilers to save fuel costs, enabling energy self-sufficiency for many overseas palm processing plants.

Connection to Your Previous Oilseed Projects

Palm fruit processing yields two types of oil: Crude Palm Oil (CPO) extracted from the fruit pulp, and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) extracted from the kernels obtained through this kernel-shell separation process. Palm kernel oil projects are concentrated in tropical countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Ghana.

Palm kernel separation involves two stages: first, separating intact palm kernels from the fiber, followed by cracking the shells and using dry air separation to separate the kernels from the shells. Key operational controls include minimizing kernel breakage and managing raw material moisture content, while the wear and tear of spare parts is a critical consideration for overseas projects.
